Bridal Jewellery in the UK: Some Information on Materials Used

From dresses and veils to shoes and gloves, every UK bride wants her wedding day to be perfect. One important detail to consider is what bridal jewellery she chooses for herself and her attendants. We offer an extensive selection of jewellery for brides that are carefully crafted from a variety of high quality materials. We can even create totally bespoke, one-off designs from the same materials. Here's some information about what goes into our wedding jewellery.

Swarovski Crystals

Produced by Swarovski AG of Wattens, Austria, this is a luxury brand of glass lead crystal that's precision cut and of exceptional quality. Swarovski is one of the most recognised brands of high-end crystals in the world and their products are used extensively in both costume jewellery and designer jewellery. Famous for their cut, clarity and sparkle, Swarovski crystals are the superior choice for crystal bridal jewellery. The reason for Swarovski crystal's superior quality is that it contains 32% lead, a substance which, when added to glass, maximises light reflection. In addition, Swarovski uses special coatings to create specific effects, such as refracting light from the surface of the crystal in a rainbow pattern. This is one of Swarovski's most popular products and is called "AB," which is short for "Aurora Borealis." If you want to enhance the sparkle and shine of your UK bridal jewellery, be sure it uses Swarovski crystals.

Freshwater Pearls

A pearl is created when an irritant is placed in the shell of a mollusc. The mollusc reacts to the irritant by covering it with a material called "nacre" that eventually forms a pearl. Nacre and the pearls formed from it have a highly-prized luminous quality that's in great demand for pearl bridal jewellery. Affordable freshwater pearls come in a range of colours, just as salt-water pearls do. In addition, pearls can be either bleached or dyed to transform their colour. Perfectly round freshwater pearls are exceedingly rare. Instead, the pearls are usually "baroque," meaning that their shape is irregular, often oval. Freshwater pearls are commonly used in silver jewellery and gold jewellery as well as in bridal necklaces, earrings and bracelets.

Glass Beads

The type of glass beads most often used in bridal costume jewellery are seed beads. These are very small and come in an amazing variety of colours and finishes. Seed beads can be either clear or opaque and some are lined with metal to give them a unique metallic cast. Other types of seed beads are processed so that they appear opalescent, a quality that's desired by bridal jewellery designers. Some seed beads are faceted, others are smooth.

Faceted beads are often chosen for bridal fashion jewellery because they catch the light well, giving the jewellery a high sparkle. Seed beads are also used to embellish garments like wedding dresses to give them a vintage look, so if you're having a traditional UK wedding, bridal jewellery with seed beads is an excellent choice.
